Tacoma Area Construction

Lane closures scheduled on eastbound SR 16 Tacoma Narrows Bridge overnight Friday, Feb. 24

Drivers who use the eastbound State Route 16 Tacoma Narrows Bridge can expect delays from 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, to 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, while WSDOT bridge maintenance crews repair an expansion joint. During this time, crews will close two lanes across the eastbound Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Drivers are encouraged to plan for extra travel time.

New northbound I-5 ramp to SR 167 to open in February

Crews are getting ready to open a new northbound Interstate 5 exit to northbound State Route 167 in Tacoma. But before the new ramp can open, crews must complete construction and pave new ramp connections. This weather sensitive work has been postponed for three weekends but will be rescheduled for the next suitable weekend. Specific times and dates will be announced as they are identified.

After the new ramp is open, the old ramp will be demolished to make room for a new HOV lane on northbound I-5. A new connection from East 28th/East Bay Street to SR 167 will also be built. Two additional weekend closures of the new ramp will still be necessary as crews do final work to complete construction.

Lane closures

  • Weeknight single-lane closures on I-5 are also scheduled between Portland Avenue and L Street.
  • Single lane closures are scheduled on eastbound SR 16 to northbound I-5 during the overnight hours from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20 through Thursday, Feb. 23.

Crews are building a new path for northbound I-5 in Tacoma
HOV makeover in Tacoma requires squeeze at SR 16/I-5 connection
Eastbound SR 16 drivers near I-5 can expect delays, congestion through spring 2017

Temporary but significant changes are underway for drivers who use the eastbound State Route 16 on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5 in Tacoma. The change will allow crews to continue efforts to extend HOV lanes into Tacoma, but a similar configuration in 2015 created routine backups on SR 16 approaching I-5.

The eastbound SR 16 on-ramp to northbound I-5 is reduced to one lane through spring 2017.

The work zone space created by reducing eastbound SR 16 to one lane at northbound I-5 will allow crews to build new road approaches to the newly constructed bridge over Interstate 705/State Route 7. That new bridge will eventually carry all northbound I-5 traffic, and existing northbound I-5 lanes will be converted to HOV lanes.

Eastbound SR 16 travelers merging onto northbound I-5 can expect congestion and delays, particularly during the morning and afternoon commute hours. Drivers headed north of Tacoma who encounter backups are encouraged to consider detouring onto State Route 7, to South 38th Street (east), and looping back onto the SR 7 on-ramp to northbound I-5.

See additional information about this change at the WSDOT Blog.

McKinley Way overpass being rebuilt

East McKinley Way at I-5 in Tacoma closed to all traffic during August 2016. The closure will allow crews to rebuild the overpass. The roadway isn't expected to reopen to traffic until late winter 2018.  Until the overpass it rebuilt, drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians will detour to the rebuilt Pacific Avenue overpass. Rebuilding both overpasses is part of the effort to expand I-5 HOV lanes into Tacoma.
