Northbound SR 7 ramp to northbound I-5 closed for construction

NB SR 7 ramp to NB I5

The month-long closure of the northbound SR 7 to northbound Interstate 5 is now underway. During the closure, crews are removing the existing SR 7 ramp to northbound I-5. Once the old ramp is gone, crews will reconstruct a new realigned ramp that will join a newly widened I-5. Weather permitting, the around the clock closure is expected to last through the month of March.

During the closure, drivers will be detoured from 38th Street using Interstate 705 and State Route 509 back to northbound I-5. Drivers are encouraged to plan extra time into their commute.

Special note
During this month-long closure, eastbound SR16 drivers using SR 7 as a detour will not be able to return to northbound I-5 via northbound SR 7.

Opening of new northbound I-5 ramp to SR 167 delayed due to weather.

  • Rain and snow has again delayed the opening of the new northbound I-5 ramp to northbound State Route 167. If the forecast allows, the work, which involves closing the existing northbound I-5 exit to northbound SR 167 for an entire weekend, will be rescheduled for 10 p.m. Friday, March 24 through 4 a.m. Monday, March 27.

HOV makeover in Tacoma requires squeeze at SR 16/I-5 connection
Eastbound SR 16 drivers near I-5 can expect delays, congestion through spring 2017

Crews are building a new path for northbound I-5 in Tacoma Temporary changes are underway for drivers who use the eastbound SR 16 on-ramp to northbound I-5 in Tacoma. The change will allow crews to continue efforts to extend HOV lanes into Tacoma, but a similar configuration in 2015 created routine backups on SR 16 approaching I-5.

The eastbound SR 16 on-ramp to northbound I-5 is reduced to one lane through spring 2017.

The work zone space created by reducing eastbound SR 16 to one lane at northbound I-5 will allow crews to build new road approaches to the newly constructed bridge over Interstate 705/State Route 7. That new bridge will eventually carry all northbound I-5 traffic, and existing northbound I-5 lanes will be converted to HOV lanes.

Eastbound SR 16 travelers merging onto northbound I-5 can expect congestion and delays, particularly during the morning and afternoon commute hours.

McKinley Way overpass being rebuilt

  • East McKinley Way at I-5 in Tacoma closed to all traffic so crews can rebuild the overpass to accommodate a wider I-5. The roadway isn't expected to reopen to traffic until late winter 2018.  Until the overpass is rebuilt, drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians will detour to the rebuilt Pacific Avenue overpass. Rebuilding both overpasses is part of the effort to expand I-5 HOV lanes into Tacoma.
