Near Sumas - Puget Sound Energy Utility Work

  • Wednesday, May 23 - Utility crews will close one lane of SR 9 near Garrison Road, south of Sumas, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for utility work. Flaggers will alternate traffic through an open lane.

  • Thursday, May 24, to the morning of Friday, May 25 - Crews will close one lane of SR 11/Chuckanut Drive between Teddy Bear Cove and Fairhaven from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. for resurfacing work. Flaggers will alternate traffic through the open lane. This work is weather dependent.

Description: WSDOT contractor crews from Coloacurcio Brothers are building a roundabout at the east junction of SR 9 and SR 542. This project will improve safety by reducing speeds of SR 542 travelers, allowing SR 9 travelers safer turning movements.

Grandview/Kickerville Road Intersection Improvements -

Description: WSDOT contractor crews from Tiger Construction will build a roundabout at the intersection of SR 548 and Grandview/Kickerville Roads to improve safety. This intersection is currently a 4-way-stop and will remain that way until the roundabout project begins.

  • Through Friday, May 18 - Crews will close one lane of SR 9 between West Big Lake Road and SR 20 in Sedro-Woolley daily from 5 a.m. until 7 p.m. for resurfacing work. Flaggers will alternate traffic through the open lane. Expect lengthy delays.
  • Monday, May 21, through Wednesday May 23 - Crews will close one lane of SR 9 south of SR 20 daily from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. to do work electrical work near the railroad tracks. Traffic will alternate through the area.
  • Tuesday, May 22 - Crews will close one lane of SR 9 between West Big Lake Road and SR 20 in Sedro-Woolley daily from 5 a.m. until 5 p.m. for resurfacing work. Flaggers will alternate traffic through the open lane. Expect lengthy delays.
  • Wednesday, May 30 - Crews will close one lane of SR 9 between West Big Lake Road and SR 20 in Sedro-Woolley daily from 5 a.m. until 5 p.m. for resurfacing work. Flaggers will alternate traffic through the open lane. Expect lengthy delays.
  • Thursday, May 31 - Crews will close one lane of SR 9 from South Skagit Highway to West State Street for pavement repair and fog sealing work.

Clear Lake Area - Francis Road Intersection Improvements - #9219

  • Through Friday, June 1- Utility crews will close one lane of SR 9 at Francis/Old Day Creek roads daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for utility relocation work. Flaggers will alternate traffic through the open lane.
  • Tuesday, May 22 to the morning of Wednesday, May 23 - Utility crews will close SR 9 at Francis Road from 6 p.m. until 4:30 a.m. for utility relocation. A signed detour will be in place.
  • Work on this roundabout project will start Monday, June 11. Crews will alternate traffic through an open lane daily from approximately 6 a.m. Monday through 4 p.m. Thursday during this work. There will be full closures of Francis Road and Old Day Creek Road during some of this work.

Bow Area - Northwest Washington Resurfacing - #9193

Anacortes Area - Paving and ADA Improvements - #9180

Description: WSDOT contractor crews from Lakeside Industries are improving pedestrian access at more than three dozen areas for people of all abilities and are paving two different sections of the SR 20 Spur through Anacortes.

  • Monday, May 21 through Friday, May 25 - One lane of R Avenue and SR 20 Spur could close at this intersection during daylight hours as crews do Americans with Disabilities Act work on the crossing area.
  • Sunday, May 20 to the morning of Monday, May 21 - One lane of SR 20 Spur near the Anacortes Ferry Terminal will close from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. for grinding and paving work. Flaggers will alternate travelers through an open lane. Those who live in the area should expect noise associated with this work. Cyclists should consider alternate routes day and night during this project. Late evening ferry arrivals from the San Juan Islands should expect delays after leaving the vessel.
  • Monday, May 21 through Thursday, May 24 - Contractor crews will close some areas near intersections during daylight hours to pave approach lanes. Travelers will still be able to navigate the area, but should expect narrow lanes and a nearby work zone.

Anacortes: Sharpes Corner Area Intersection Improvements - #9177

Description: WSDOT contractor crews from Tapani Inc. are building a roundabout at the intersection of SR 20 and Miller/Gibralter Roads, and the SR 20 Spur (Sharpes Corner) to improve safety and efficiency.

Work Schedule:

  • Through June - Crews will reduce lanes to one lane in all directions through the SR 20 SR 20 Spur intersection, known as Sharpes Corner. These reductions will be in place around-the-clock, including weekends and Memorial Day. Drivers through this area will notice different lane configurations approximately every two weeks as crews work to build bypass lanes and a two lane roundabout. Major work at SR 20 and Miller Gibralter roads is complete and the roundabout at this intersection is operational.

  • Monday, May 21, until the morning of Wednesday, May 23 - Crews will close one lane of SR 20 between SR 525 and the Coupeville Ferry Terminal nightly from 9:30 p.m. until 6 a.m. for resurfacing work. Flaggers will alternate traffic through the open lane. This work is weather dependent.

Ski to Sea

  • Sunday, May 27 - Plan for extra congestion on highways between Mount Baker and Bellingham Bay as participants and fans participate in Ski to Sea.
  • SR 542 - Crews will close Mount Baker Highway from Silver Lake Road to the Mount Baker Ski Area from 7:15 to 11 a.m. for a portion of the Ski to Sea event.
  • SR 547, SR 544 and SR 9 - Drivers should expect a large number of cyclists on these highways. Please share the road.
