Soils testing completed on Montlake Market property

We recently conducted test drilling in Montlake where the Montlake Market and 76 gas station are located, and found contaminated materials in the soil and groundwater. We plan to acquire this property later this year to enable construction of improvements to SR 520 as part of the upcoming Montlake Project. You can read the full soil-testing report (pdf 14mb) on the SR 520 website. We’re working closely with technical experts to learn more about the contamination and determine the next steps.  We’ll keep the public informed as we know more.

Join us Jan. 30 for another WSDOT public meeting regarding the Montlake Market

We're holding a public meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 30, to share more information and gather community feedback on potential scenarios and tradeoffs associated with our efforts to preserve the Montlake Market building after WSDOT acquires the market property. During this meeting, we'll also discuss ideas we're evaluating for preserving the market building and review our Montlake Project contractor's current construction plan. The meeting will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2100 Boyer Ave. E., in Seattle. If you missed our November meeting on the market, you can read our answers to questions (pdf 250kb) community members posed on this topic. You also can watch a video replay of the entire proceeding on YouTube or view the meeting’s presentation slides on Flickr.

New construction schedule announced for SR 520’s Rest of the West improvements

We have a new, updated schedule for implementing the $1.6 billion of remaining SR 520 corridor improvements funded by the Legislature’s 2015 Connecting Washington transportation legislation. We are moving ahead on several key fronts that will allow us to enhance public safety and mobility by replacing aging and vulnerable SR 520 corridor structures. We call this area west of the new floating bridge the “Rest of the West.” The work kicks off in early 2019 with the Montlake Project, followed by construction of a new transit/HOV connection between SR 520 and Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood. Even more improvements come later. Learn more about the phased projects in this news release or check the project links on our Rest of the West webpage.

Program Overview

The SR 520 Bridge Replacement and HOV Program is enhancing public safety and mobility by replacing the highway's aging, vulnerable bridges and making significant transit and roadway improvements throughout the corridor. The construction program's planned improvements extend from I-5 in Seattle to I-405 in Bellevue.
