CONSTRUCTION 

Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Clallam
Contact: Olympic National Park
Description: Lake Crescent Highway Rehab Project. The National Park Service & Federal Highway Administration will rehabilitate 12 miles of Highway 101 around Lake Crescent and 4 miles of East Beach Road to address safety and long‐term maintenance issues.
The project will begin in March 2017. The project will continue through 2019.

CONSTRUCTION

SR 8 - Middle and East Forks Wildcat Creek - Remove Fish Barriers
Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 5 to 6.3

Description: Crews will remove barriers to fish. Beginning spring 2017, SR 8 will be reduced to one lane in each direction through summer 2019. The SR 8 speed limit will be temporarily reduced from 60 mph to 45 mph for the duration of the two-year project.

Description: Ditch maintenance. Drivers on northbound SR 105 can expect alternating single lane traffic controlled by flaggers.

Description: Utility crews will repair asphalt following infrastructure installation. Northbound drivers can expect right lane closure with traffic a shift.
Work Schedule: 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23 through 5 a.m. the following day.

Highway: SR 305 Region: Olympic County: Kitsap County Location: Milepost(s) 6.8 to 7.1

Description: Crews will clean and inspect the SR 305 Agate Pass Bridge.
Drivers will encounter one-way alternating traffic with flaggers with delays between 30 minutes and 1 hour.
Drivers are encouraged to carpool. If possible, drivers are asked to consider delaying or cancelling discretionary trips. Ferry riders are urged to consider using the Bremerton/Seattle or Kington/Edmonds routes.

Schedule: To accommodate crews and equipment, the bridge will be reduced to one lane during the below hours and days.

Description: Casecade Bicycle Club's 'Chilly Hilly' bicycle ride. Drivers can expect riders crossing SR 305 at Hood Cove Road.

CONSTRUCTION

SR 3 - Belfair Area - Widening and Safety Improvements

Highway:

Description: This widening project will extend the center turn lane and provide paved shoulders and sidewalks on both sides of SR 3. The improvements are intended to be built in two separate stages.

Work schedule:
Drivers will encounter a temporary traffic shift so crews can make roadway improvements on the east side of State Route 3.
The highway has been restriped between NE Ridgepoint Boulevard and NE Old Clifton Road. Two lanes of traffic are shifted to the west side of the highway and the center turn lane is unavailable.

Drivers still have access to the left-turn lane from SR 3 to NE Old Clifton Road. The temporary traffic shift is expected to be in place through March. Inclement weather could lengthen that time.

In addition, drivers can also expect one-lane alternating traffic with flaggers each weeknight from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning.

SR 302 - N of E Victor Rd - Culvert Replacement

Description: Crews will replace two failing culverts and install infrastructure to help stabilize the highway.

From 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 and again Tuesday, Feb. 21, drivers can expect northbound traffic shifts into the media. 

At 11 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 21-22, drivers can expect one-way alternating traffic, until 4 a.m. each following morning.

I-5 - M Street to Portland Avenue - HOV

Description: This project rebuilds Pacific Avenue and McKinley Way bridges spanning I-5. It builds a new northbound SR 7/I-705 bridge, and widens I-5 to accommodate northbound and southbound HOV lanes from M Street to the vicinity of the L Street bridge.

I-5 - SR 16 Realignment - HOV Structure and Connections

Description: This project is the final of a three stage effort to rebuild the Nalley Valley interchange. During the final phase, crews will build ramps that create new HOV lanes between I-5 and SR 16. The project will also realign I-5 to accommodate HOV ramps.

I-5 - Portland Avenue to Port of Tacoma Road - Northbound HOV

Description: This project builds new HOV lanes on I-5 in Tacoma and Fife, and a new northbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge.

Temporary but significant changes are underway for drivers who use the eastbound State Route 16 on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5 in Tacoma. The change will allow crews to continue efforts to extend HOV lanes into Tacoma.

Work schedule: 

Lane Closures:

  • Drivers who use the northbound I-5 collector/distributor lane to northbound I-705 can expect a left lane closure during daytime hours Monday, Feb. 13 and Tuesday, Feb. 14 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
  • Weeknight single-lane closures on I-5 are also scheduled between Portland Avenue and L Street.

Ramp closures

The opening of the new northbound I-5 ramp to northbound SR 167 has been delayed for a second weekend due to weather. The work will be rescheduled for the next suitable weekend. Specific times and dates will be announced as they are identified.


Friday, Feb. 17
• Southbound I-705 on-ramp to northbound I-5 and southbound SR 7 will close from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.
• South 38th Street on-ramp to northbound SR 7 will close from 11:59 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.

Monday, Feb. 20
• South 38th Street on-ramp to northbound SR 7 will close from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following day.
• Southbound SR 167 on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.
• Pacific Avenue and the southbound I-705 on-ramps to southbound I-5 will close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.
• East 28th Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.

Tuesday, Feb. 21
• South 38th Street on-ramp to northbound SR 7 will close from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following day.
• Southbound SR 167 on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.
• East 28th Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.

Wednesday, Feb. 22
• East 28th Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.

Thursday, Feb. 23
• Portland Avenue and SR 167 on-ramps to southbound I-5 will close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.
• Southbound I-5 exits to SR 7 and I-705 will close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.
• Bay Street on-ramp to northbound SR 167 (River Road) will close from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.
• East 28th Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.

Friday, Feb. 24
• East 28th Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 11:59 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.




I-5 Mounts Rd to Center Dr. - Auxiliary Lane Extension

Description: Crews will build a new auxiliary lane on northbound I-5 between Mounts Road and Center Drive.

Work Schedule: Drivers in both directions can expect night single- and double-lane closures and daytime shoulder closures. Most night lane closures begin at 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. the following day.

I-5, Point Defiance Bypass - Sound Transit Track and Signal, BNSF Railroad Bridge

Description: Point Defiance Bypass Project will reroute passenger trains to an inland rail line along the west side of I-5 through south Tacoma, Lakewood, and DuPont.

Train testing along the Point Defiance Bypass train tracks is underway.  Trains will travel at speeds up to 79 mph in February and March.

Hazard tree removal. The 38th Street ramps to northbound SR 7 will close. During the same time, the northbound SR 7 exit to Interstate 705 will also close.

Drivers wishing to access the State Route 7/Pacific Avenue on-ramp to eastbound State Route 512 will need to use an alternative route during the overnight hours of Saturday, Feb. 18.

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

  • Pay attention - Driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.
  • Leave room between you and the car ahead of you - Most work zone accidents involve someone running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively - be aware of what is happening around you.
  • Merge before you reach the work zone. 
  • Don't use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.
