The following activities are scheduled for Friday, April 28, through Friday, May 5, 2017.

CONSTRUCTION 

Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Clallam

Description: Lake Crescent Highway Rehab Project. The National Park Service & Federal Highway Administration will rehabilitate 12 miles of Highway 101 around Lake Crescent and 4 miles of East Beach Road to address safety and long‐term maintenance issues.

Construction delays will begin mid-July, 2017.  Four-hour delays will begin after Labor Day on the western half of U.S. Highway 101 (west from Barnes Point). Specific dates for these 4-hour delays will be announced and posted 2 weeks in advance.

The project will continue through 2019. 


SR 112, US 12, SR 109 Chip Seal

SR 8 - Middle and East Forks Wildcat Creek - Remove Fish Barriers

Work schedule: Westbound SR 8 is reconfigured to accommodate both directions of traffic. The SR 8 speed limit in the area is now reduced to 45 mph. This reconfiguration is illustrated in this YouTube video.

The intersection of SR 8 and SR 108 in McCleary is closed to all traffic around the clock through summer 2019. During the closure, drivers headed to McCleary will be directed to the Mox Chehalis Road interchange.

Description: Crews will repave sections of SR 8 between US 101 in Thurston County and McCleary.
Work Schedule: While work is under way, westbound SR 8 will be reduced to one lane. The single-lane closures are scheduled to occur between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. each weekday. Weather permitting, the work will be complete before July.

Please note the total closure of SR 166 (Bay Street) has been rescheduled for the week of Monday, May 8.

During that time, crews will close a section of State Route 166 (Bay Street) near SR 16 to all traffic around the clock for five days. During the closure, a signed detour will be provided via Port Orchard Boulevard and Tremont Street West. The specific closure time on Monday will be provided as the date approaches.

SR 3 - Belfair Area - Widening and Safety Improvements

Description: This widening project will extend the center turn lane and provide paved shoulders and sidewalks on both sides of SR 3. The improvements are intended to be built in two separate stages.

Work schedule:

Drivers can expect traffic shifts at the intersection of Clifton Road and SR 3 and work during the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. during weekdays.

Crews may be paving on Friday, April 14. Drivers can expect short-term traffic stops for trucks entering and leaving the work zone between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

SR 302 - N of E Victor Rd - Culvert Replacement

Highway: SR 302 Region: Olympic County: Mason  Location: Milepost(s) 4.5

Description: Crews will replace two failing culverts and install infrastructure to help stabilize the highway.
Until further notice, SR 302 near Victor has been reduced to a single lane with traffic being controlled by a signal. The speed limit is also reduced to 25 mph. These temporary measures will be in effect until dry weather allows crews to re-establish two lanes of traffic.

Work schedule:  This project remains on standby due to weather. Work requires seven consecutive days of dry weather. Due to a slide condition, the roadway has been reduced to a single lane.

I-5 - M Street to Portland Avenue - HOV

I-5 - SR 16 Realignment - HOV Structure and Connections

Northbound I-5 exit 133 to Tacoma city center closed through November 2017

Northbound I-5 exit #133 to Tacoma's city center is closed for construction through November 2017 to build new HOV connections between I-5 and SR 16.

During the closure, detour signs will direct northbound I-5 traffic to use the SR 16/South 38th Street exit (#132) to reach downtown Tacoma destinations. WSDOT posted a video showing the detour route to help drivers visualize the changes.

Extended ramp closure
The month-long closure of the northbound SR 7 ramp to northbound I-5 has been extended into April while crews continue to reconstruct a new ramp that will join a newly widened I-5. The delay is due to excessive rain and wet soil conditions. WSDOT will announce an opening date once the information is available.

Ramp closures
In all instances where a ramp is closed, a signed detour will be in place.

Friday, April 28 
• Southbound I-705 ramps to northbound I-5 and southbound SR 7 will close from 11:59 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following day. 
• East 38th Street ramp to northbound SR 7 will close from 11:59 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day. 
• East 28th Street ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 11:59 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day. 
• From 2 a.m. until 5 a.m. Saturday, April 29, all lanes of southbound I-5 will be detoured via Bay Street, State Route 509, I-705 and back to southbound I-5 for striping.

Monday, May 1
• Northbound I-5 exit to northbound SR 167 will close from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.
• Southbound I-5 exit to SR 7 will close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.
• East 38th Street on-ramp to northbound SR 7 will close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.
• Southbound I-705 exits to northbound I-5/SR 7 will close from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.

Tuesday, May 2
• Southbound I-5 exit to SR 7 will close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.
• All lanes of northbound I-5 will be detoured at exit #132 to I-705 and SR 509 from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m. Wednesday, May 3.

Wednesday, May 3
• Southbound I-5 exit to East 27th Street and East Bay Street will close from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following day.
• Southbound I-5 exit to SR 7 will close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.
• East 38th Street on-ramp to northbound SR 7 will close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.

I-5 Mounts Rd to Center Dr. - Auxiliary Lane Extension

Work Schedule: On Friday, April 28, southbound I-5 exit #116 to Mounts Road and the Mounts Road on-ramp to southbound I-5 will close for striping from 11:59 p.m. Friday, April 28 to 6 a.m. Saturday, April 29.

On Monday, May 1, the Center Drive on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close for striping and temporary barrier installation from 11 p.m. Monday, May 1 to 4 a.m. Tuesday, May 2.

  • Overnight single- and double-lane closures will take place throughout the week on both directions of I-5 within the project limits. Monday through Friday, southbound lane closures are allowed between 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. with northbound lane closures allowed between 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Saturday morning lane closures on southbound and northbound I-5 are allowed until 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. respectively.


I-5, Point Defiance Bypass - Sound Transit Track and Signal, BNSF Railroad Bridge
Highway: I-5 Region: Olympic County: Pierce Location: Milepost(s) 125 - 116

Description: Point Defiance Bypass Project will reroute passenger trains to an inland rail line along the west side of I-5 through south Tacoma, Lakewood, and DuPont.

Traffic signal modifications: Changes in the timing of traffic signals at I-5 intersections in DuPont and Lakewood have resulted in longer wait times than normal. The flow of traffic is being monitored to determine if improvements can be made and if so, workers may be adjusting equipment at exits 119, 122, 123, and 125. Traffic signals were changed to synchronize all three sets of stop lights at each exit to prevent backups on the overpass, which often lead to vehicles stopped across the railroad tracks.

SR 167, SR167 SW of Grandview Ave to W of 87th Ave E - Paving

SR 167, Region Wide HAR Improvements

Description: Crews are updating WSDOT Highway Advisory Radio system.
Work Schedule: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday southbound drivers will encounter right shoulder closures.

I-5 - 93rd Ave SW and Koontz Rd Bridges - Special Repair

Description: Crews will replace a 93rd Avenue overpass girder.

Work Schedule: Work will begin Monday, April 24. The westbound access across the bridge will detour to northbound I-5 during the evening of Monday, May 1.

93rd Avenue overpass
• Westbound 93rd Avenue drivers will have no access to southbound I-5.
• Northbound I-5 drivers will have no access to westbound 93rd Avenue.
• A signed detour will be provided.

The overpass is expected to reopen to two-way traffic in late June. 

At times crews will reduce northbound I-5 to one lane and drivers will be directed through the 93rd Avenue interchange.

LED Roadway Lighting Reform Program
Highway: I-5 Region: Olympic County: Thurston Location: Milepost(s) 102 to 109

Description: WSDOT crews are retrofitting street lighting poles along various highways in the state. They are replacing lights with energy efficient and cost saving, LED bulbs and removing some light poles.
Work Schedule:

9 p.m. Wednesday, May 3
Northbound I-5 exit to northbound US 101 and southbound I-5 exit to northbound US 101 will close. These ramp closures will not occur at the same time. All exits will reopen by 5 a.m. the following day.


9 p.m. Thursday, May 4
Northbound and southbound I-5 exit #105 to State Capitol, City Center, Port of Olympia will close. The ramp closures will occur one direction at a time. The exit will reopen by 5 a.m. the following day.


Work will occur at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday night, until 5 a.m. each following day. Drivers may encounter lane, shoulder between Tumwater Boulevard and College Street. Short-term ramp closures will occur after 9 p.m. each night.

All lane closures and ramp closures are consecutive not concurrent.

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones
