Lengthy closures required to replace expansion joints on northbound I-5 Duwamish River Bridge

TUKWILA – The start of fall typically means highway construction projects begin wrapping up for the winter. That includes #ReviveI5 work south of Seattle, with just two remaining weekend-long lane closures on northbound Interstate 5 in Tukwila.

The interstate will be reduced to two lanes north of the I-5/I-405/State Route 518 interchange from Friday, Sept. 29, to Monday, Oct. 2, and Friday, Oct. 13, to Monday, Oct.16. Drivers need to plan for lane closures starting at 8 p.m. each Friday, with all lanes reopened by 5 a.m. each Monday. The work is weather dependent.

During the weekend of Sept. 29 to Oct. 2, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will replace expansion joints in the left lanes of northbound I-5 at the Duwamish River. People driving should plan ahead for the following:

  • The northbound I-5 HOV bypass lane will be closed.
  • The on-ramp from eastbound SR 518 to northbound I-5 will remain open, but drivers will need to merge right almost immediately.
  • Both lanes exiting to SR 599 will remain open, providing an alternative route into Seattle.

Know before you go
People driving should prepare for delays during the weekend lane closures.

  • Allow extra travel time, particularly driving to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
  • Consider taking a carpool, vanpool or public transportation.

Project progress
This #ReviveI5 project requires 11 weekend-long lane reductions on northbound I-5 to do work that takes too long to complete during overnight closures. Nine weekend closures are complete. During those weekends, crews have:

  • Repaved more than 4 miles of northbound I-5 between SR 516 and the Southcenter area.
  • Replaced the expansion joints at Interurban Avenue.
  • Repaved the Interurban Avenue overpass and the Duwamish River Bridge.
  • Replaced hundreds of broken concrete panels.

Much of the work on this $31 million project to rehabilitate and preserve I-5 has taken place at night, including concrete repair, replacing broken panels and grinding the concrete surface to eliminate ruts in the pavement. Nighttime lane closures will continue into summer 2018.
