Drivers can get a free Good To Go! sticker pass before SR 99 tunnel tolling starts

SEATTLE – Tolling the SR 99 tunnel is still months away, but there’s a new incentive to help drivers get ready.

The Washington State Department of Transportation unveiled an SR 99 tunnel incentive program, Wednesday, May 1, which allows SR 99 tunnel drivers to get free Good To Go! sticker passes before tolling starts.

“Fewer than one-third of vehicles currently using the SR 99 tunnel have Good To Go! passes,” said WSDOT Toll Division Director Edward Barry. “Using a Good To Go! pass is not just the most convenient way to pay a toll, but it’s the best way to make sure you’re paying the lowest toll possible.”

This incentive eliminates the up-front cost of a pass. It is limited to people who drive the SR 99 tunnel, including both new and existing Good To Go! customers.

Tolling in the SR 99 tunnel

The SR 99 tunnel opened toll-free on Feb. 4, 2019, with the understanding that tolling would start after demolition of the Alaskan Way Viaduct along the waterfront and when a new tolling system was tested and operational.

Tolling the new tunnel is required by the law. Tolls will help pay tunnel construction bonds as well as operation and maintenance of the two-mile long tunnel underneath downtown Seattle.

With a Good To Go! pass registered to an account, toll rates will range from $1 to $2.25, depending on the time of day. If drivers register their vehicle on an account, but don’t have a pass, it will cost 25 cents more per trip. Without a Good To Go! account, it will cost drivers $2 more per trip.

Getting a free sticker pass

  • The sticker pass is one of four Good To Go! passes. First, make sure the sticker pass is the best pass for you.
  • To get a free sticker pass, fill out a short survey. WSDOT will mail the pass within four weeks of completing the survey, and then customers must activate it by adding it to a Good To Go! account.
  • Opening an account currently requires $30 in pre-paid tolls. When WSDOT migrates to a new billing system – before tolling starts in the SR 99 tunnel – all drivers will have the option to open an account without a pre-paid balance. Drivers can choose to wait to activate their pass until this new option is available, however, their pass will not work in the meantime.
  • One free sticker pass per person, while supplies last.
  • Additional sticker passes can be purchased for $5 online at MyGoodToGo.com or at retail locations.
