Low-risk construction resumes on SR 520 Montlake Project

In keeping with Gov. Inslee’s phased approach for reopening Washington’s economy, the SR 520 Montlake Project resumed key low-risk construction activities on Monday (May 18). As we restart construction, all crews must follow specific safety protocols (pdf 138) for preventing exposure to the coronavirus, including workers staying at least six feet apart from one another on the jobsite. Initial activities in this low-risk phase of work include removing trees in the median along Montlake Boulevard and starting the removal of the former Montlake Market building and 76 gas station. WSDOT temporarily paused most of its construction projects in late March in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the governor's Stay Home, Stay Healthy order. Read more about the restart of construction in our latest email update.

Please visit our Montlake Project online open house, through June 9, and take the survey

Even as Montlake Project construction was suspended, our contractor was putting the finishing touches on the design of key Montlake Project elements. Check out the latest project information in our spring online open house. Open through June 9, it includes a look at project designs, a survey for you to share your priorities, and a preview of upcoming work.

Hop online for our June 3 Montlake Project construction update meeting

High rollers on the Montlake Project

Two large blue gantry cranes sit on wooden bridges above an old highway that's being removed.

Prior to March's pandemic-related suspension of WSDOT construction, our Montlake Project crews built two massive gantry cranes in Montlake. You can watch this time-lapse video of the crane-assembly process. Crews will use the cranes – and another pair yet to be assembled – to remove the old eastbound SR 520 bridge over Union Bay and build a new one between Montlake and the floating bridge. Attached to giant wheels, the cranes will roll east and west atop temporary work trestles as crews lift out sections of the old bridge and lower in sections of a new, replacement bridge.

Program overview

The SR 520 Bridge Replacement and HOV Program is enhancing public safety and mobility by replacing the highway's aging, vulnerable bridges and making significant transit and roadway improvements throughout the corridor. Built in stages, the construction program's completed and planned improvements extend from I-405 in Bellevue to I-5 in Seattle.
