Alternative

The demand to deliver quality projects faster with shorter construction times and minimize impacts to the traveling public has never been greater. WSDOT is working to implement or investigate a variety of alternative delivery techniques to accomplish this.

A+B bidding is a method of rewarding a contractor for completing a project as quickly as possible. By providing a cost for each working day, the contract combines the cost to perform the work (A component) with the cost of the impact to the public (B component) to provide the lowest cost to the public.
The Flexible Start Date provision allows the contractor some discretion, within given criteria, to establish when a project's working days are going to start. On standard contracts, the working days begin being charged ten calendar days following execution. This start date does not necessarily fit all projects.
Interim completion dates allow WSDOT to address concerns of local agencies, businesses, and the traveling public with regard to the duration of a portion of a contract.
Lane Rental is used to minimize the impacts of a project on the traveling public. It is a method of transferring the roadway user costs to the contractor. The contractor must rent a lane in order to close it. This creates a monetary incentive for the contractor to be innovative and minimize the duration of lane closures.
Lump Sum Traffic Control is a method to streamline all traffic control unit items into a single item. The contractor submits a single lump sum bid for developing, implementing and maintaining traffic control on a contract.
