Design Memorandum

TO:                  All Design Section Staff

FROM:            Bijan Khaleghi
DATE:             February 8, 2008
SUBJECT:       STD Plan Retaining Wall

The attached STD Plan Retaining walls are for immediate use in WSDOT contracts. These plans replace the Standard Plans D1-a through D1-f of WSDOT publication M21-01 “Standard Plans for Road, Bridge, and Municipal Construction”. This memorandum does not apply to the ongoing awarded contracts.

Background:

Beginning January 2008, WSDOT requires all new bridges, bridge widenings, and walls to be designed in accordance with the requirements of the AASHTO Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design. WSDOT has recently upgraded the Standard Plan Retaining walls to the new AASHTO LRFD seismic design requirement of 1000 year return period earthquake. These plans need FHWA approval for official publication but this may not be done until August 2008. This memorandum is to implement immediate use of the revised wall plans, consistent with the new seismic design policy requirement, while waiting for FHWA’s approval and official WSDOT publication in the Standard Plans.
