OLYMPIA – Efforts are underway to extend the network of Puget Sound area Interstate 5 ramp meters into Lacey and Olympia.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation are installing four new southbound I-5 ramp meters at the following locations:

  • Martin Way East
  • Sleater-Kinney Road Southeast
  • Pacific Avenue Southeast
  • Henderson Boulevard Southeast

Installation will require nighttime ramp closures. Advance information of ramp closures is available at the Thurston County construction and travel updates web page.

Following a testing phase, WSDOT anticipates the new ramp meters will activate by early autumn 2019.

Ramp meters help keep I-5 moving. This proven technology allows vehicles to merge onto the highway more efficiently.

Another southbound I-5 ramp meter is a part of the I-5/Marvin Road diverging diamond interchange project. That ramp meter will activate at a later date.

Drivers are encouraged to receive email updates for this project and other major roadwork on state highways in Thurston County.
