Expect overnight work and delays for improvement project on East Sunset Drive

BELLINGHAM – There’s no place like home, and starting the night of June 9, home will start to look and feel a bit different for travelers of State Route 542/East Sunset Drive in Bellingham.

Next week, Washington State Department of Transportation contractor crews from Granite Construction will begin replacing a culvert near Dewey Road before repaving all lanes of SR 542 from the Interstate 5 interchange to Britton Road. Removing and replacing damaged asphalt will preserve the highway and create a smoother surface for all its users.

In addition to the culvert and new pavement, crews will also improve pedestrian highway crossings and, in partnership with the city of Bellingham, build a sidewalk on the south side of Applebee’s at SR 542 and I-5.

Expect delays beginning Sunday, June 9

During construction, people who travel on SR 542 between I-5 and Britton Road should expect:

  • Overnight lane closures.
  • Sections of rough, ground-down road during daytime travel.
  • Detours for non-motorized users such as pedestrians and bicyclists.

Please remember to slow down and pay attention near work zones to keep construction crews and drivers safe.

It may not happen as quickly as tapping your heels together three times, but crews are scheduled to wrap up this $5.5 million project in fall 2019.
