SR 161 - Milton Rd S Vicinity to SR 18 - Paving & ADA Compliance

Project news

Needs & Benefits

SR 161 between SR 18 and Milton Road South in Federal Way was last repaved in 1997. The highway is in need of repair after years of traffic has created ruts and caused cracking. The ruts and cracks can lead to damage of the underlying layers that support the roadway, which would require major, expensive repairs. By repaving this portion of SR 161 now, the potential for these costly repairs is greatly reduced.

Contractor crews will also assess the transitions from sidewalks to crosswalks, known as curb ramps, and upgrade them when necessary to provide better sidewalk connections for people of all abilities.

This project’s benefits include:

  • Safety: Eliminating ruts and cracks in the pavement will reduce the opportunity for water to collect on the roadway, which can reduce traction for vehicles. Improved curb ramps will improve access along the highway for people of all abilities.
  • Economic/Preservation: Repaving this section of SR 161 will preserve the highway structure and reduce the need for costly repairs.

What should people expect?

Most of this work will take place during overnight lane closures, as crews grind off about two inches of old asphalt and repave it. Access to businesses along the corridor will be maintained during the work.

During construction, drivers should expect sections of rough roadway and bumps on SR 161, and at business access points.

When crews are replacing curb ramps, sidewalk users may need to use alternate routes.
