SR 162 - Spiketon Creek Bridge - Temporary Bridge

Project news

  • Beginning Thursday, August 22, users of the Foothills Trail beneath the bridge will encounter brief delays of up to 10 minutes as crews remove existing guardrail from the bridge deck. Flaggers will direct trail users to momentarily wait while guardrail is removed.
  • Daytime drivers will encounter one-way alternating traffic controlled by flaggers on State Route 162 and Mundy Loss Road on Monday, Aug. 19 through Thursday, Aug. 22 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.  This work allows crews to complete necessary electrical work as part of this construction project.

  • During construction, WSDOT would like to advise users of the Foothills Trail (which is owned and maintained by Pierce County) to expect short term closures at the site throughout summer as construction continues. Any scheduled closurse of the Foothills Trail will be posted at the trail heads.
  • All work is expected to be complete Oct. 2019.

Needs & benefits

The State Route 162 Spiketon Creek Bridge in Buckley closed Aug. 16, 2018 after crews surveying the bridge in preparation for a month-long deck repair project discovered up to four inches of pier settlement. WSDOT’s goal with the originally scheduled deck repairs was to keep the bridge operational until 2022, when it was scheduled to be permanently replaced. Unfortunately, the recent discovery changed that timeline.  Out of concern for public safety, crews closed the bridge and a detour for the 5,600 daily motorists who had been crossing the bridge was implemented immediately using Mundy Loss Road, SR 410 and SR 165.

After working extensively with the community and elected officials, WSDOT made the decision to restore the crossing with a temporary span bridge. Current scheduling shows the temporary bridge will open to traffic by fall of 2019.

The temporary bridge will be a modular, steel bridge that will sit just above the existing structure. The temporary crossing will be a two-lane bridge, with one lane in each direction with no load restrictions. Users of the Foothills Trail will encounter short, intermittent closures during construction. WSDOT will announce any closures as they are scheduled.

WSDOT published a blog post that addressed much of the community’s concerns with repair vs. replacement, timeline and funding.
