SR 500 - Burnt Bridge Creek to 4th Plain Rd - Paving and Expansion Joints

Project news

Overview

In summer 2019, contractor crews will repair the pavement along State Route 500 between St. Johns Road and Fourth Plain Boulevard in Vancouver.

Crews will also replace the bridge expansion joints on the SR 500 overpass, over I-205 and adjust the SR 500 ramps at Northeast Falk Road and Northeast 54th Avenue/Northeast Stapleton Road to SR 500.

Needs & benefits

  • Last paved in 2002, this heavily traveled east-west highway sees nearly 60,000 vehicles a day. The aging pavement is cracked and in need of repair. In addition to its age, the increasing number of cars and heavy trucks on the road, along with freeze/thaw cycles, have contributed to the deterioration of the highway.

What should travelers expect during construction?

This weather-sensitive highway work will require a full weekend closure of all eastbound lanes of SR 500 between I-5 and Northeast Thurston Way, and a full weekend closure of all westbound lanes of SR 500 between I-5 and Northeast Thurston Way. Additionally, crews will intermittently close lanes between Northeast Thurston Way and Northeast Fourth Plain Blvd.

Travelers should plan to use alternate routes during the full weekend closures and expect delays of up to 20 minutes during the single and double lane closures.

  • During the full weekend closure of eastbound SR 500, crews will close all lanes from I-5 to Northeast Thurston Way beginning at 10 p.m. on a Friday and reopen the highway by 5 a.m. on a Monday.
  • During the full weekend closure of westbound SR 500, crews will close all lanes from I-5 to Northeast Thurston Way beginning at 9 p.m. on a Friday and reopen the highway 4 a.m. on a Monday.
  • Intermittent single and double lane closures between Northeast Thurston Way to Northeast Fourth Plain Blvd. Lane closures times vary day to day but, in general, should occur:
  • Eastbound SR 500:
    • Weekends between 9 pm and 8 am
    • Weekdays between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m.
  • Westbound SR 500:
    • Weekdays between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
    • Weekends between 8 p.m. and 8 am

Timeline

  • Spring 2019: Project scheduled to go to competitive bidding
  • Summer 2019: Project scheduled to begin
  • Early fall 2019: Project scheduled for completion

Funding

The estimated cost of construction is approximately $6 million.
