SR 530 - Sauk-Suiattle Confluence - CED Retrofit

Project news

  • Contractor crews with Trimaxx Construction, Inc. have started work to stabilize the bank between the Sauk River and SR 530.
  • Travelers should expect 5- to 10-minute delays as temporary traffic signals alternate traffic through the work zone between Darrington and Rockport.
  • Also, a separate project between Darrington and Arlington will create additional 5- to 10-minute delays through Aug. 20.

Needs & benefits

The river bank along State Route 530 between Darrington and Rockport, parallel to the Sauk River, is classified as an area of chronic environmental deficiency (CED). CED status means the bank requires frequent maintenance and repairs to maintain the highway, which negatively affects the river’s fish habitat.

In 2019, Washington State Department of Transportation contractor crews will use a combination of logs and rocks to stabilize this bank between the Sauk River and SR 530. Crews will also build an additional protective barrier, known as a toe revetment, to help protect the area from river currents and future erosion.

What to expect
In order to safely stabilize the bank, crews will need to close one lane of SR 530 around the clock between July and August. A temporary signal will alternate traffic through this area. Travelers should plan on 5-10 minute delays during peak periods. Once the around-the-clock work is complete, lane closures will take place on weekdays.

People traveling SR 530 between Darrington and Arlington should also plan for minor traffic delays for another project to replace two culverts at Schoolyard and Trafton creeks.
