SR 6 - South Branch Fronia Creek and Fronia Creek - Fish Passage

Project news

Beginning summer 2019, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation, will begin work to replace to aging and failing culverts that cross under State Route 6 with a new bridge, just east of Pe Ell, in Lewis County.

Needs & benefits

Replacing the aging and failing culverts with a wider concrete bridge span will improve fish passage, and improve safety to users of the highway. Moreover, during heavy seasonal rains, the existing culverts become a choke point for storm water, and forces excess water over the roadway.

By combining the south branch of Fronia Creek to the main branch of Fronia Creek, and replacing the culverts with one full span bridge, it improves drainage and results in a creek crossing that complies with the federal injunction and WDFW water crossing guidelines. Additionally, it improves fish passage and reconnects streams to keep our waterways healthy.

  • Protects Environment: Improving fish passage by opening up the stream creates an additional fish habitat.
  • Improves Safety: Replacing the culverts with a concrete bridge span lessens erosion around roads by providing better drainage.
  • Reduce Costly Repairs: Replacing the culverts with a concrete bridge span will reduce the cost of emergency maintenance repairs.

What can travelers expect during construction?

During construction, traffic will shift to the east side of the road, onto a temporary single-lane, bypass road. This detour allows travelers to safety bypass construction around-the-clock, and will be controlled with an automated signal. Travelers should expect delays of up to 20 minutes, for additional intermittent, daytime single-lane closures, as needed. Most of this work will occur during the summer and fall.
