Overview

This stretch of State Route 99 between Fife and Federal Way is approximately 17 years old. With thousands of vehicles and trucks using this portion of the highway each day, the aging asphalt is cracked and in need of replacement.

In 2019, WSDOT contractor crews will grind and repave one mile in both directions of SR 99 between the Pierce County line and South 359th Street in Federal Way.

Needs & Benefits

  • Safety: Eliminating ruts and cracks in the pavement will reduce the opportunity for water to collect on the roadway, which can reduce traction for vehicles. New reflective striping and highway markers will also provide greater visibility for roadway users.
  • Preservation/Economic: Repaving this section of SR 99 will preserve the highway structure and reduce the need for costly emergency repairs.
