Overview

In 2020, contractor crews working for WSDOT will repair the bridge decks on nearly two dozen structures along US 2 between the area west of Index (Proctor Creek/Big Bend) and Skykomish (Tye River vicinity).

Needs & benefits

Nineteen bridges on this 23 mile stretch of US 2 are in need of repairs. The pavement on the bridges dates back to 2002 and has outlived its anticipated 15 year lifespan. This preservation work requires removing the old asphalt, inspecting the bridge deck and making any necessary repairs then putting down waterproof material. This material protects the steel rebar from rusting. Crews will also repair any damaged expansion joints then put down the new asphalt surface.

Properly rehabilitating these bridges also reduces the need for emergency repairs which can be costly to taxpayers and cause additional congestion if the work must be done during peak commute hours.

What travelers should expect

Most of the work will happen during single lane closures with alternating one-way traffic. Traffic holds may last up to 20 minutes. Several of the bridges are very narrow at just 24 feet wide and no shoulder. During lane closures, the open lane of travel may be just 10 or 11 feet wide. To protect workers and travelers in these narrow work zones, the speed limit may be reduced from 55 or 60 miles per hour to 10 miles per hour.
